We Value Our Volunteers – "Many Hands Make Light Work"
At the Mount Evelyn Junior Football Club, our volunteers are the heart of everything we do. We are a community club, run entirely by parents and volunteers, ensuring game days operate smoothly and that our kids enjoy learning and playing football in a welcoming environment.
Our committee, responsible for making important decisions, is made up entirely of volunteers—and we’d love more people to join us! Here are some ways parents can get involved:
Coaches
Coaches play a vital role in guiding our teams. They receive support from a coaches’ coordinator, where they can debrief and seek advice. Most coaches are parents who generously volunteer their time for training and match days. While an AFL coaching course is required, some parents choose to coach together, supporting each other along the way. Each team has one main coach, sometimes assisted by an additional coach.
Team Managers
Team managers are responsible for coordinating game-day logistics, managing team lists, and assigning roles to parents to ensure smooth operations.
Trainers
Trainers—typically parents or volunteers—complete a first aid course and assist with minor injuries during games. If a child is concussed, trainers follow AFL concussion protocols and ensure they are safely removed from play.
Runners
Runners work closely with coaches to deliver instructions to players during the game.
Goal Umpires
Parents take on the role of goal umpires. Before the game, they collect a white coat, two flags, and a scorecard from the clubrooms. Their job is to record goals and points, handing the completed scorecard to the team manager at the end of the match.
Canteen Helpers
For home games, parents are rostered to assist in the canteen. While the club has two full-time canteen staff, they provide training for parents to help with easier tasks. The canteen is a key fundraiser for our club, making volunteer support essential!
Oranges & Lollies Duty
Each week at halftime, the kids receive oranges and lollies for an energy boost. One parent is assigned to this role per game. Please prepare 11 oranges (44 pieces total, two per player) and bring lollies in a plastic container. These should be handed to the team manager before the game, and containers will be returned afterward.
